S/S 2021 Trend Forecast

During the summer of 2019 I attended a study abroad program in Florence, Italy. During this program I took a class on Trend Forecasting, that focused on studying the fashion market and predicting future trends within the industry. In this class we attended the 2019 Pitti Filatti trade show in Florence and were tasked with using the information we received from the show to create a trend forecast for Spring Summer 2021. Below is the project that my team and I created. Our project was chosen to be shown at the final art show held through the SRISA Arts Program at the end of the summer semester.

Desert Bloom

In the coming years consumers are shifting towards being more concerned with nature and interpreting nature in fashion. Consumers are calling for sustainable fashion with minimalist silhouettes. The typical styles will not be as stiff, with more focus on local resources and craftsmanship. The new color palette is influenced by the extreme effects of climate change with burnt oranges and deep red, but also a glimmer of hope with a few natural colors as well. Ultimately, this trend is defined by the use of sustainable fibers and textiles for long term garments with a less drastic negative impact on the environment.

Modern Progressivism

How will technology impact us next? Will we be able to print our own garments from the comfort of our own home? “Modern Progressive” is a cohesive culmination where technology meets sustainability, creating a new age in fashion. With the innovation and increased accessibility of 3D printers the waste of excess material is eliminated. With the increased use of innovative plant based materials there is a greater focus on sustainability. The advancement of this technology eliminates waste and produces a more durable product. Organic, structured shapes can be created, influenced by shells and patterns found in nature, creating futuristic structured pieces.

Imperfectionists

There is  a shift in consumer perception of needing to be perfect; you must attend the right school, be financially stable at the right age, be the right weight, and so on, until now. This trend is inspired by the Japanese idea of wabi-sabi, which enhances and accepts flaw where there is more of an emphasis and acceptance on being unique. The imperfectionists trend highlights differences from person to person. Also, it features imperfections in knitwear, and realizing that if something looks worn, it simply means it was loved. The trend contains abstract patterns, and items that are not traditionally considered pretty.
