The first class freshman enrolled in VCU’s Fashion Merchandising Program take is called Computers for Fashion. In this class students are taught how to use Adobe products such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign. Throughout the semester we are assigned small projects that show our skills using this software. The final project for this class is a demonstration of the accumulation of those skills shows in a fashion line created by us. The task was to create a 6 piece collaborative collection with an athleisure brand. Each student must first create a mood board and color concept for their collection then utilize that mood board to create prints. Those prints were then incorporated into digitally designed garments.

Mood board inspired by the colors and culture of Brazil.

These are two of the prints I created using colors and design features I pulled from the mood board.

The brand I chose to collaborate with was called Prana. It is a sustainable, outdoor and athleisure brand that creates garments for women between the ages of 24 and 50. I choose to partner with this brand because I wanted to create a bold collection that was bright and colorful. Many of Prana’s current collections are full of colors and patterns which is why I chose to collaborate with this brand. I started with creating a mood board of colors and images. I decided to focus on Brazil. I used images of their architecture, native birds and plants to create bold and colorful prints.

After creating the prints I designed 6 garments including a sweatshirt, jacket, pants, sports bra, dress and hat using Adobe Illustrator. I utilized contrasting colors and bold prints to create bight and eye-catching garments. I made sure each garment was made from a flexible, comfortable material that would allow the user to not only wear these items day to day and be easy to wash but to wear them for outdoor activities or working out.
